Introduction to Chris the Computer Science Major

Hi, my name is Chris, and this post will be a little introduction to me. I am currently a junior at OU as a Computer Science major. You may ask why a Computer Science major is taking a class about Mythology and Folklore and the main reason for that is because I have always enjoyed mythology since I was a kid. I enjoyed reading books that were based around mythology, specifically the Percy Jackson series, and enjoyed learning about all sorts of folktales from different cultures as I continued to grow older.

I am Vietnamese but I was born in Oklahoma and have lived here all my life. If I’m being honest, Oklahoma is pretty boring as there’s not much to do so I wouldn’t mind moving to another state. As for my hobbies, I only really have one hobby which is playing basketball but in recent times, it has been kind of difficult to keep that hobby going. Therefore, I really want to find a new hobby to replace basketball at least for the time being. I think that learning how to play an instrument would be a cool hobby to pick up, but I am definitely not musically talented in the slightest so it would be kind of difficult.

I enjoy all types of food, so I don’t really have a favorite. Although if I am being honest, I’m slightly picky but I am always willing to try anything at least once. When listening to music, I honestly listen to every type as long as it sounds good, but I definitely have phases throughout the year where I will solely listen to one genre for like a whole month and then the next month, I will be listening to something completely different. Finally, I know that this introduction is kind of just a fact dump, but I hope you at least learned a little more about me.

  1. Hey Chris. I am also Chris!

Very cool that you're studying computer science. I have been interested in computer science since high school. I've learned some java, swift, and python, and I actually code a lot for my astrophysics assignments here at OU. Additionally, I also loved the Percy Jackson series when I was younger! Haha, seems like we have quite a few things in common.

I think you should definitely go for learning a new instrument if you want to! Anyone can be musically talented if they put in the effort. I played guitar for many years growing up, but have not played recently with college consuming so much of my time. Your comment made me want to pick up the guitar again!

    Have a great semester Chris!

  2. Hi Chris!
I think it is really cool that you are a computer science major, that sounds awfully hard. I am not very tech savvy, but I wish I was! I love that you are taking this class out of your past love for Mythology! I, too, loved the Percy Jackson series, but can't honestly remember them that well anymore. Unfortunately this is my last semester here, but if it wasn't I would take a class out of pure interest in its topic. I regret not doing that.
I also get really into one genre of music for like a month and then move on and those songs will maybe reappear and I'll go back through that phase. Rinse and repeat is how I would describe my taste in music. I am currently going through a Green Day phase.
I look forward to reading more of your post and interacting virtually throughout this semester!

  3. Hi Chris!
My name is Madison, and I am also a junior. The fact that you are a computer science major blows my mind because it seems pretty challenging. Kudos to you!
In the fourth grade, my class read the Percy Jackson series and took a field trip to the movie theater to watch it when it came out. I enjoyed the books, but I don’t have any recollection of them now.
What part of Oklahoma are you from? I’m from Owasso! Maybe we live near each other or maybe not, but you’re absolutely right, Oklahoma is very boring.

It was nice getting to know you. Good luck on the rest of the semester.

  4. Hi Chris!

My name is Savannah and I am a senior! I know it must be hard to find ways to play basketball especially with the current state of the pandemic, but also with the winter weather! If it does end up getting warmer I highly suggest going to a park there are plenty in this area that have small basketball courts I never see people playing at when I walk by!

If you are looking for a hobby to take the place of basketball and you are slightly picky about food, a good hobby you could pick up is meal prepping or learning one recipe you enjoy eating. I myself am a bit pickier, and I have bad food allergies so I have learned a couple of easy 10 minute recipes that I can always count on being pretty good tasting. Or you can go father than myself and experiment with food!

I am all over the place with my music taste, but I have been getting into Spotify playlists that are generated by the app and there are actually some really good ones out there and it is so minimum effort, I don't even have to curate it myself! It's nice to get to know you, and I hope Myth and Folklore is a good and fun break from your schedule!

  5. Hey Chris! It was great getting to read your post and learn more about you. I agree with you that Oklahoma can be quite boring. Although, I recently realized that downtown OKC has grown a lot in the past few years and there's tons of interesting places to eat and hangout. Unfortunately, no one can really explore the area anymore because of the pandemic. Learning an instrument sounds like a great hobby to get into. I used to play the piano and violin, but it's been years so I've completely forgotten everything which is really sad. You could also try to take up cooking since you said you're a picky eater. I tried to cook more this past year and it's been pretty fun! The only downside is all the cleaning up afterwards.

  6. Hey Chris!
I loved the Percy Jackson books growing up also and they were a major influence on me joining the class also! I loved how they did a great job of bringing old stories into the modern era, much like this class does. also, I have had many opportunities to reread them over the years, especially during Covid. Lots of free time and a lack of opportunity to interact with others has helped me develop new hobbies and I would definitely recommend tryin an instrument. I have played guitar for about 15 years now and I'll plug it till I die. It takes work but you can definitely do it even with no natural talent! Praying for a wonderful semester!

  7. Hey Chris!

I'm a junior as well but was not brave enough to take a route such as Computer Science. I have never been super good with technology, so I really respect the people that have a passion for that sort of stuff. I never read any of the Percy Jackson books but I did see the movies, and I thought they were super cool. I also respect the basketball hustle. I'm not too great at the sport myself but am always down to try to shoot around with some friends. I think it's awesome that you are trying to find another hobby to occupy your down time right now! I hope your semester goes well, and I enjoyed learning more about you!

  8. Hey Chris!
I am also taking this class because of my childhood love for mythology, which is rooted in my elementary Latin classes and reading the Percy Jackson books! We have a couple things in common besides that. I love basketball, it was my life growing up and I still love it to this day. However, you're right that it is hard to have it has a hobby currently, so I've taken up disc golf since it is outdoors, and it is a blast. I'm also a pretty picky eater so no shame in that.
Best of luck to you this semester!

  9. Hey Chris,
I think it's awesome that you're compsci, I could never, far too difficult for me. I loved the Percy Jackson series, I've read almost all of Rick Riordan's works!
I am bad when it comes to music I'll listen t a song on repeat for a month till I hate it!

Also, I read your first story on Aesop's Fables and the farm setting you gave it with cats and thought it looked great. Dude hope you have a great semester and cant wait to keep reading your stuff.

  10. Hey Chris!
I am also from Oklahoma! I have lived here all my life, but I think I might stick around for awhile or move to Texas. Who knows? I enjoy watching basketball, however, COVID has kinda put a damper to my hobby as well. I could barely keep up with trades and picks. I don't even recognize who is on the Thunder anymore.

I think it would be cool to pick up a musical holiday. You never know if you might unlock a deep secret talent.

    Have a great semester!

  11. Hi Chris!
I'm from Oklahoma but I didn't live here my whole life and highly encourage you to experience living somewhere not here!! It's very exciting. I love that basketball is hobby of yours, do you keep up with the NBA at all? I think learning a new instrument would be very interesting and also something that would keep you busy the same way basketball might! I know you said you were picky but if you have any interest exploring foods you like I would also consider cooking for hobby! I personally love it and I've learned more of what I like to make and find it fun to experiment. It was great reading about you!!

  12. Hi Chris!

It's cool that you're a computer science major, I'm a computer engineering major in this class! I took this class for many of the same reasons you did, Percy Jackson was also my introduction to mythology as a kid. I absolutely love those books!

I agree with you about Oklahoma's lack of entertainment, I have also lived here all of my life. I would love to move to another state to be able to experience something a bit different. Looking forward to reading some of your stories this semester!

  13. Hi Chris!
I think that it is awesome that you took this class because you have an interest in mythology. We have a lot of opportunities to take extracurricular classes that don't necessarily pertain to our majors, and I feel like a lot of people approach classes as a checklist and don't take advantage of that opportunity. I did the same with this class, as I love the mythology and religious writing, and I am SO happy that I did!

  14. I have a musical instrument recommendation for you, Chris: try drumming! I have tried a lot of instruments over the years, and drumming is the one that has worked the best for me meaning that I really like to practice every day (and because I practice every day, I get better and better, and so on). You can drum along to any kind of music too! I have bongos and also a djembe drum (a small one, since I am pretty short, ha ha)... and it's so cool playing along to music I like: some music works, some music doesn't, but I just play along with everything and now I listen really carefully for the drum part of every song too. And there are videos at YouTube for EVERY instrument on the planet I guess; I found some great drumming videos to learn from. I will really be glad to get to spend my time going out and about when this impossible pandemic finally gets under control, but I know I will keep drumming too. That has been my best pandemic discovery: highly recommended if you want an instrument that is super-easy to start with and fun too! :-)

  15. Hi Chris!
I first have to start off by saying I have a huge respect for computer science majors. I took only two programming classes in my MIS degree, and they were not easy by any means. I have to agree with you that Oklahoma is pretty boring, and am also looking to move. I have never really like sports, but a common hobby these days is video games, and I'm sure many of your friends play! I am right with you on your music taste, I will listen to near anything if it hits right!

  16. Hi Chris!
I hope you find things that you like about Oklahoma. Sports are a huge part of the social scene here, especially outdoors one, and I wonder if there would be another, more distant one to try. One sport that sounds absolutely ridiculous but is very fun and challenging yet doable is called Pickleball. I laughed the first time I saw the name too - but it's worth a shot!

  17. Hi Chris!

What better reason is there for taking a class than enjoying its subject? Mythology is an incredible look into the minds of past cultures, and something I think never gets old!

Hopefully, you'll soon be able to continue your hobby of basketball. With the vaccine becoming more and more available, I feel that we can finally see the light at the end of this long tunnel!

  18. Hey Chris!
Mad respect for majoring in computer science! I took an intro comp sci class my freshman year and it kicked my butt! But it was super fun so I can see why you would want to peruse that as a major!

I completely agree that Oklahoma is pretty boring. In fact, I think it is the most boring place I've ever been haha.
